Day In the Life

Based on the latest research on child development, Pre-K3 and Pre-K4 at St. Athanasius lay the foundation for success in elementary school and beyond. The program includes hands-on center time, creative learning and innovative methods of monitoring children’s progress. It devotes time to building student independence and teamwork, fostering classroom readiness and nurturing student imagination. The program utilizes learning centers and unique materials to support the curriculum, including interactive SMART boards and iPads.

St. Athanasius’ Kindergarteners focus on building key math and reading skills by utilizing 21st century technology to supplement the curriculum. Students are encouraged to think critically about the day’s topics and to use project-based learning to re-enforce concepts and develop creativity. Music, art and religion enrich the academic day and make learning fun, creating an early association between enjoyment and school.

First and second graders at St. Athanasius further dive into their Math and ELA education, beginning work with manipulatives and increasingly complex concepts. Students work on their core studies via whole class instruction and small group collaboration that fosters leadership skills, teamwork and critical analysis. In the Science lab, they conduct hands-on experiments, and in Social Studies, they focus on American history. Project-based learning encourages creativity and develops macro thinking.

Third, fourth and fifth grade students assume greater responsibility for their learning and are challenged to further develop their foundational skills. Cross-curricular approaches encourage students to present and defend ideas in their speech and writing. English Language Arts continues with poetry, author studies, and independent reading. Ballroom Dance, the New York Philharmonic school day program, art appreciation and the vibrant after-school Discovery program augment the curriculum and ensure well-rounded interests.

Six, seventh and eighth grade students thrive as student role models as they prepare for high school, college and beyond. The middle school students benefit from a rigorous curriculum combined with arts and music that allows them to explore their interests and define their strengths. Through the Friends of Nick program, the student leaders build habits of integrity, hard work and compassion. Secondary advising is available for seventh and eighth grade students to help guide them through the high school application process.
